The most northwestern of the metro counties, Bartow is situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and borders the northern shore of Lake Allatoona. The first settlers of this area were so enchanted by the natural beauty and fertility of the land, they purchased acreage from the Etowah Indians, the original inhabitants of the lands along the Etowah River. The Etowah Indian Mounds located near Cartersville are listed on the National Register of Historical Places, and make for a very interesting day trip to see the fascinating achievements of some of America’s early Indian Mound Builders.

The town was spared total destruction by Sherman’s troops during the Civil War and has over 150 properties in the historic district. There are some new homes, turn of the century Victorian style homes, farms homes, and other homes on acreage as well.
CARTERSVILLE - a charming town located not far from lake Allatoona in southern Bartow County, and about 35 miles NW of Atlanta on I 75. First named Birmingham by the two Englishmen who settled there in the 1830s.The town was later renamed after Col. Farish Carter, who is believed to have once suggested only jokingly that the town be named after him, after which this became a reality. Today Cartersville is a thriving community and the center of commerce and government in Bartow County. Cartersville has a wide variety of new home prices from $150K up to the $500 range near lake Allatoona, and some homes on acreage, and restored and modernized early period homes.
