Cherokee County Information & History
Located north of Cobb County in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Cherokee County is a very desirable place to live, with new homes and well-planned swim/tennis and golf communities being built at a steady pace, yet the area still maintains the rural charm and tranquility it has always had. Cherokee County is named after the Indian tribe that first settled this area, and in the early 1800s comprised a vast area that now covers 24 Georgia counties. There is a diversity of small industries, including two new agribusinesses – horse farming and horticulture. The addition of I-575 into the county has made access into downtown Atlanta and other metro spots much easier. First Woodstock now Canton, have been among the fastest growing cities in the state, and both were among the 20 fastest growing cites by percentage in the country in 2002. If country living appeals to you, you may want to consider this beautiful county in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

RECREATION, CITY & COMMUNITY INFO
Lake Allatoona offers campgrounds, picnic areas and boat launching facilities, and the county operates 10 parks for baseball, softball, swimming, and tennis. Some parks offer pavilions, walking and jogging trails and playgrounds. The recreation department offers programs for children and adults.
– this pleasant small town’s name is said to have come from a stickball game that was played by the Cherokee Indians. Local lore has it that the outcome of a game played between the Cherokee and Creek Indians, using land as the prize, banished the Creek Indian tribes from North Georgia.BALL GROUND
CANTON – early settlers had hoped the area would become a Chinese silk center and so named the town after the Chinese seaport. Canton which is the county seat, never made it with silk, but with the rail line from Marietta and the Canton Cotton Mills it became an important textile town. The mills became famous for creating the popular material known as brushed denim. Marble deposits are all around this area and the mining and finishing of marble was one of the first industries in the 1800s. Still very rural the area is enjoying new growth and development. New and resale homes are available, and there have been several recent large new home subdivisions, River Green to the west, and Great Sky and Laurel Green to the north. Canton has big plans underway for a 700 acre industrial and technical park that will bring money, jobs, and growth and make it much more than a bedroom community.
WALESKA – this quaint college town is located in the hills of northwestern Cherokee County and takes its name from an Indian maiden who was the daughter of a tribal chieftain. The Methodist-supported Reinhardt College located here was formed in 1883. Not far away is the resort community of Lake Arrowhead, which has a 540-acre lake and an 18-hole golf course.
WOODSTOCK – this charming small town is located in southern Cherokee County and due to its closer proximity to Atlanta is one of the most quickly developing areas in the county. One of the largest residential developments in Atlanta called Town Lake is located here. Town Lake was designed as a "self contained town" and is one of the better examples of this concept - it has new schools and shopping areas, two golf courses, and numerous swim/tennis neighborhoods in various price ranges from around the $140's to over $500,000. Another large residential development called Bridgemill is located up Hwy. 575 just north of Woodstock. It is also designed around a self contained "town" concept and features a championship quality 18-hole golf course, two acre aquatic center, and 50-acre athletic club that has Atlanta’s largest residential tennis center with 27 courts. Home prices range from around the $150s to over $500,000.
